San Francisco Carnaval Parade

May 28th, 2002

This Time
So, the Carnaval black and white is back, the color will be ready tomorrow. A couple of comments: The entry I wrote about the young woman who was complaining that I'd taken her picture ("who are you? who do you work for? Oakland PD? FBI? CIA? why did you shoot my picture?") did show up peripherally in one of the photographs I'd taken at the Judi Bari demonstration. No reason to run it here, it wasn't a very good picture and running it either way would be unfair. I'm not fundamentally opposed to unfair, I've run pictures of people who have attacked me on the street in the past, but they were good pictures. Can't pass on a good picture. I'd caught a particular facial expression on a man in the crowd and my upset woman happened to be standing off to the right among a number of others. I missed getting the man's expression. Happens. Too often.

I was kinda hoping she was so far out she used the opportunity to verbally assault me, understanding it didn't matter whether I'd taken her picture or not. An interesting idea. I realize I've taken it way beyond anything that has anything to do with the woman. If I were a writer, I'd write the episode into a novel. (Odd thought. Can a book come out of a thought so simple? Stay tuned for a few years.)

My photographs of butoh babe were shot in color and I won't see them until tomorrow. If any one of them turns out, butoh babe, I'll send you a copy tomorrow (with my thanks). Well, maybe Thursday. Tomorrow is my day for a few beers after work with a band of fellow miscreants from the office.

I received an email today from another journaler and photographer who's had business cards printed toSan Francisco Carnaval Parade give to people he's shooting, finding it useful in getting their permission. I've been thinking of doing the same thing. Have some zooty cards printed (I've been wrestling over what to use for a picture. A photographer needs a picture.) with the new web address for the photography site I've been saying I'm going to put together for the last two years. Some of which I have put together, of course, but saying more than doing. I recently transferred the domain name I plan to use to an ISP (which means the clock is running and every day has the impetus of costing me money), so I assume I'll actually get it online. The cards? Well, I have a photographer friend who has a show opening next week. I seem to recall she had some really nice cards, good printing, good color (although mine will be black and white), so I'll ask her at the opening where she had them done. That means I'm going to do it. The ISP thing: another sign I'm gonna get off my duff this time.

The photographs were taken at the San Francisco Carnaval Parade last Sunday.
