In The Garage
Friday. Overly warm yesterday, as mentioned, but the apartment cooled off by midnight and I had a good night's sleep, walking to breakfast this morning just after seven to spend more than an hour eating, drinking coffee and reading the papers. The Chronicle had an editorial excoriating the Democrats for caving on the FISA bill, something that always surprises me a bit as I don't usually consider the major newspaper in a city to be other than quite conservative, even in outer space San Francisco. The New York Times said much the same thing in equally sharp terms yesterday. OK. I assume every other paper in the country skipped any comment on their editorial pages. No interest out there in the rest of the nation. But then there hasn't been a Fourth Amendment story out there ever, before or after nine-eleven.

Take a deep breath, exhale, take another deep breath....

I know, I know. A hangover from my youth listening to the radio in the late fifties just outside of New York City. The creepy people who wanted to put you in jail for reading D.H. Lawrence or joining a political group left of Adolph Hitler. Why would that make an impression? A newly minted teenager? Who cares about any of this stuff? And besides, who in their right mind reads Lady Chatterley's Lover anymore? I have a fifty year old dust covered copy sitting up in one of the bookcases in the living room. Why me, Mr. Natural? Why didn't I settle in like a good privileged kid, go to Harvard and become a lawyer?

Lack of smarts?

That and a touch of ADHD.

Still, again, the weather is much like yesterday's weather, which means it's going to be too warm in another couple of hours. The head-sinus thing is behaving itself, the world closed in a bit around me, but otherwise the day is beginning well. I'm thinking of taking the forty dollar discount card the feds sent me and buying one of those digital converter boxes they say you'll need by the beginning of next year. That and a replacement pre-filter (whatever that is) for the big GE air filter I have sitting in the bedroom. Not sure why I'm thinking of doing that today, but for some reason I've had the urge to run the damned thing again. Air filters? Wasn't that one of those “need to have” three years ago deals, all the junk associated with it sitting out in the garage?
