Jack London Square, July 4th, 2004

More Than Bearable
I remember last year's Fourth of July. I managed to get to Jack London Square, but left before dark. I'm not sure I shot a single picture. This year I arrived three hours early, walked about taking pictures and stayed for the main event. All bullshit aside, this is good. I find it difficult to tell from reading my old entries how I was really feeling: what did I mean by this, what did I mean by that? Whatever I meant, and last year's entry seems somewhat positive, this year was better, these last few weeks have been, well, knock on wood, pretty damned good and I've felt like shooting pictures.

I like the top photograph. I wasn't sure if any of them would turn out: high contrast bright sun followed by bright lights going "pop" in the night. I used the digital camera and today's pictures give me more confidence in the color. Shooting in the barbecue smoke, for example: you can look at the LED on the back, but you don't really know until you drop them into PhotoShop. Most weren't, you expect that, but some were, and that's good. More smoke here and here and here, some fireworks here and here (yes, I did stay after dark).

Not all were wonderful. These are the first "fireworks" photographs I've taken. Next time I'll position myself differently. I tried this one in an attempt to get the Square in the picture (piddle and poof), I tried some of these: here and here (Gwen did them better), but the day was fine and the music more than bearable..

The banner photograph was taken this evening in Jack London Square in Oakland with a Nikon D2h mounted with a 28 - 70mm f 2.8 Nikkor lens at ISO 200. The night shots were taken at ISO 1000.
