Twice

Sunday. Another lights out early evening, except this time I awoke at two and didn't get back to sleep for close to an hour, awakening then at six-thirty, half an hour later than I'd have liked. Thoughts running through the head in that hazy two in the morning hour about mortality and things needing to get done before this aging thing gets out of hand. Ah, well. Clear headed and in a good mood driving to breakfast on what looks to be a cloudy, maybe sunny later day ahead.

The single pork chop, eggs or medium, country potatoes, toast, fruit cup and coffee for breakfast. One fifty-one on the scale this morning, about what it's been now since Christmas. Interesting (to me, at least), but not something to worry about. The weight isn't going anywhere I don't want it to go, one-fifty more or less means it's still on target.

The Chronicle had quite a few stories on 1968, the year Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were assassinated. King was killed when I was still stationed at Fort Lewis, waiting to be shipped to Vietnam. Robert Kennedy was killed after I'd arrived in Korea, having been diverted to Korea when the North captured our spy ship the Pueblo and the army needed more junior officers in case things in Korea got out of hand. Yes, it was an unsettling year, both for the good and for the very bad.

Which means?

You can never tell when a phone message may arrive saying you've got fifteen minutes before the missiles hit the ground.

Took my time over the papers before heading for the car, happily taking the usual pictures as I set out for home.

Later. Watched football through the afternoon that ended with a great finish to the Saints-Vikings game. An amazing last play of the game touchdown to end an afternoon where I'd not had a single thought to go outside on this never quite arriving “sun later” day.

Evening. There are things I wanted to get done, but opted for football and then two Elementary episodes I'd seen before and didn't need to see again that started at five. Still, tomorrow is another holiday, and so there's still time remaining to prepare for the coming week. Sounds about right. We like our rationalizations to sound sensible, even if no one would ever believe them thinking twice.
